Our Generation

My brother Cam lent me an incredible documentary called 'Our Generation' which moved me to tears and inspired me get involved.

'Our Generation' is a journey into Australia’s indigenous relations, from colonisation until the present day. It looks at Australia’s ongoing policies of paternalism and assimilation, explains the real issues underlying Indigenous disadvantage in this “lucky” country, and upholds the right of First Australians to dignity, culture and empowerment in their own country.
The project started out in June 2007, in response to the Howard Government’s controversial ‘Emergency Intervention’ into Aboriginal communities in Australia’s remote Northern Territory. All in the name of ‘protecting children’, the Intervention took away all existing Aboriginal land rights, suspended the Racial Discrimination Act and placed over 70 communities under compulsory government control.
No Aboriginal people living in these communities have had any say in these decisions being made about their lives, their lands and their future. And mainstream media has ignored their voices, and their plight.

Here is the official trailer...

Please visit the 'Our Generation' website and please watch/buy this incredible documentary.

The lyrics to 'Bones' are inspired by Australia's largely untold history: a history of sweeping atrocities under the rug, a history of silencing Australia's first people, a history of ignoring their voices and insulting their culture.

Vena Portae

Vena Portae: "A short vein that carries blood into the liver."

Vena Portae is a collaboration between myself and Dom Lawton aka Dom Coyote.
We first started writing songs and performing together in the spring of 2009 during a 3-week residency at Battersea Arts Centre as a part of a Kneehigh Theatre 'Asylum' programme.
We've started publishing sketches of our work and you can hear them by visiting: Vena Portae.
Here's one song below that we wrote and recorded in one evening...

Western Australia

The Blackwood River

I write to you from my hometown, Bridgetown, Western Australia.
When I look to my right I can see the magnificent Blackwood River. It is wonderful to be home seeing family, reading, writing, swimming in the river, feeling sun on skin, smelling the eucalypts. It's been a very dry summer and everyone is willing the rains to come.
During my time here I'm going to be doing a few solo shows...

Saturday 19th March @ The White Star Hotel, Albany 9pm with Dom Coyote and Joel Barker.
Friday 1st April @ The Cidery, Bridgetown 5:30pm also with Dom.
Saturday 16th April @ Fly By Night Club, Fremantle 8pm onwards.

Best wishes,
Emily
